IMIS presented a paper at the Wild Aid Global MPA Enforcement Conference held in San Francisco, California. The paper covered Turkey's use of Class B AIS with special messages to enforce monitoring and management of the national fishing vessel fleet.
Turkey's implementation requires all domestic fishing vessels to carry AIS transponders and report additional fields specific to fisheries management. Marine Protected Area enforcement is an important AIS application, enabling authorities to monitor vessel activity within designated zones and identify potential illegal fishing activity.
