IMIS Global presented a paper at the AMSA Nav18 conference examining the use of AIS messages by maritime authorities. The research found that most authorities use only 14 of the available AIS message types, and that Application Specific Messages (ASMs) defined in IMO Circular SN.1/Circ.289 are largely unused.
Greater use of these messages would enhance the service offered by shore-side authorities to ships within range, enabling richer information exchange including weather data, port clearance, dredger operations and navigational warnings. IMIS continues to develop AIS message support within MariWeb .
